Once again, we have been given the opportunity to volunteer at the New Hope Food Pantry in Southgate.  We have been volunteering for the past few years and each year our number of volunteers has grown.  We are very excited to be able to help those in need and hope you are too.  We will help distribute food items for Thanksgiving on November 19th and Christmas December 17th..  We encourage parents as well as students from grades 3 through 8 to participate in sharing your time with this community.  You may volunteer one day or both.  We know that some students will have basketball games on these dates so we will adjust volunteer times once the schedules are published.  Every year there are groups of volunteers that have arrived a little late or need to leave early, and everything always works out fine.  Any time that you can help, even an hour is extremely helpful.  We normally begin by 8:30 and finish around Noon.  In the past, we have served up to 180 families, so we need all the help we can get.  We also welcome alumni to come join us!
Please read and mark one of the responses below and return to school by Friday,

October 28th.  Plans can change, we understand.  Right now we are looking for an approximate number of volunteers to give the food pantry so they know if additional volunteers are needed.  Additional information will be sent home to those who participate on the Monday before the volunteered day.  If you have any questions, please let us know ~~ Mrs. Twehues and Mrs. Dee

Save Fred!

Author Unknown

I dreamed I stood in a studio and watched two sculptors there.
The clay they used was a young child's mind,
and they fashioned it with care.
One was a teacher; the tools he used were books and music and art;
One a parent with a guiding hand, and a gentle, loving heart.
Day after day the teacher toiled, with touch that was deft and sure,
While the parent labored by his side and polished and smoothed it over.
And when at last their task was done,
they stood proud of what they had wrought.
For things they had molded into the child could neither be sold or bought.
And each agreed he would have failed if he had worked alone,
For behind the parent stood the school,
and behind the teacher, the home.

Standardized Testing will start tomorrow for both the 5th and 6th grade students.

Here are a few tips for the days we will be testing:
  • Go to bed on time, if not a little early
  • Eat a good breakfast and don't drink a large amount before the test
  • Relax and think positive!

A few students had questions regarding the Greek Family Tree Project.  This should help answer those questions.

1.  All 12 names must be on the poster board
2.  The item/items of which they are a god must be on the poster board
3.  Students need to represent each of the gods by using a symbol, or picture.  Students may DRAW OR USE PRINTED PICTURES.

BUT, if they use printed pictures, they must be supervised by their parent.  When you simply search Greek gods, you often get pictures of statues that may be inappropriate for our age level.

There were 12 chief gods whose earthly home was thought to be Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece.  Each of the twelve had special functions or jobs.

Zeus, god of the sky, was the ruler of the gods.
Hera, Zeus’ wife, had charge of marriage and the birth of children.
His sister Hestia was protector of the home.
His brother Poseidon had charge of the sea.
Another brother, Hades, was god of the underworld.

The other Olympian gods were children of Zeus.

Athena was the goddess of wisdom.  She was especially honored at Athens.
The beautiful Aphrodite was goddess of love and beauty.
Apollo was the god of both the sun and music.  Statues of Apollo often show him holding a stringed instrument called a lyre.
Artemis was goddess of hunting and of the woods.
Hermes was god of the flocks and was also Zeus’ messenger.
Hephaestus was god of fire and metalworking.
Ares was the god of war.

Who killed King Tut?
Or was he even murdered?
Was it an accident?
