ADVENT PALS

Yesterday marked the first day of Advent, a time of preparation of the coming of Christ.  In class today we secretly chose our Advent Pals.  Each student chose the name of another classmate or myself as their Advent Pal for the next 3 weeks.  We will be completing projects/activities in class during this time for our Advent Pal.  On December 20 we will have a class celebration during which we will reveal our Advent Pal to each other.  During this celebration students will exchange a small gift with each other.  These gifts can be handmade or store bought, costing no more than $5.00.  Please send the gift to school with only the Advent Pal name labeled by Wednesday December 18.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by note or email.

FIELD TRIP TOMORROW

Tomorrow December 3 is our class field trip to the Verdin Bell Company, the Peace Bell in Newport and the Cathedral Basilica in Covington.  Students must have their permission slips returned by TOMORROW morning in order to participate.
Each student will need to PACK their lunch for this field trip.  Before our visit at the Cathedral Basilica, we will be eating lunch in the Covington Latin School cafeteria.

Currently I have 3 drivers for this field trip, but am in need of additional drivers.  Please let me know by email tonight if you are able to drive and attend with us.

We have already entered our next contest!  On October 25 a National Contest including 1810 students began.

Let's Go Team!  Start working those problems, quickly and accurately!!

This week we started our Religion Chapter on Baptism and Confirmation.  Each student will be writing letters next week to their Godparents.  If a student does not have Godparents to write to, they will be writing letters to their parents.

Each student will need the necessary addresses, envelopes for each letter and a stamp for each.  If you do not have stamps, please send $0.50 for each and I will purchase them for the student.

Interviews on Faith
Due Friday October 4

My job is to interview 3 people.  I must ask each person the following 3 questions.  I can for now just write their responses as notes instead of sentences.  I need to make my notes as detailed as possible and write down everything I can that the person says.

The three people can be any age, but they must be different ages.  For example my 12 year old brother, my mom and my Grandpa.

Questions:

1.  Are there some saints who are special to you?  Why are they special?

2.  Sacramentals are things like rosaries, statues and holy water.  Do you have any sacramentals?  If so, how do they bring you closer to God?

3.  In school we learn about different kinds of prayers and devotions.  What are some that are important to you?  Why are they important?

Father God,
I thank you for this Labor Day holiday. I thank you for this time when I can choose to get added rest, or added fun, or added time to catch up on necessary chores.
Lord, this is also a great day for reflection. This is a day to thank you for the many gifts and talents that you have given me to serve you and serve others.
Lord, you have equipped me, you have prepared me, and you will enable me to make great contributions to this world. Enlarge my vision of your awesome plan for my life.
I thank you for your heavenly guidance. I celebrate the revelation, motivation, and determination that will take me to the next step in my destiny.
Bless my work and my career for your glory. Enlarge my opportunities. Enable me to be prosperous as I dedicate myself to giving my best to the work assignments you have given me.
In Jesus' Name I pray,
Amen

Extra Credit Percentage Points

I will be showing the students how to answer the extra credit questions on the Blog Tuesday or Wednesday.  Since we will be having a Social Studies test on Friday there will be extra credit questions posted.  Students are given the opportunity to earn 3 extra credit percentage points by completing the 3 questions by Friday.  Students may email the answers to me using a home or school email.  They may also hand write the answers.  Sometimes I do not receive the answers emailed through the Blog page itself.  I would recommend students check with me by Thursday to be sure I received the email.  If I did not, they can send it again or simply hand write them

Thank you to all the parents who came to
Back to School Night!

Monday, August 19, 2013

We had a great start to our first full week of school today!

Just as a reminder, all students have a "Take Home Folder".  You will find the weekly Spelling words and a monthly calendar marked with important dates.  Students should take this folder home every night.
Students also have an assignment book that should be taken home every night.  Students write their nightly and weekly homework in these books before they leave each day.

Lord,

Let me be just what they need.

If they need someone to trust, let me be trustworthy. If they
need sympathy, let me sympathize. If they need love, (and
they do need love), let me love, in full measure.

Let me not anger easily, Lord but let me be just. Permit my
justice to be tempered in your mercy.

When I stand before them, Lord, let me look strong and good
and honest and loving. And let me be as strong and good and
honest and loving as I look to them.

Help me to counsel the anxious, crack the covering of the shy, temper the rambunctious with a gentle attitude.

Permit me to teach only the truth. Help me to inspire them so that learning will not cease at the classroom door.

Let the lessons they learn make their lives fruitful and happy.
And, Lord, let me bring them to You. Teach them through me
to love You.

Finally, permit me to learn the lessons they teach.

Amen

We will begin our standardized testing this Tuesday and continue through until next week.  Below I have posted a few tips for parents.

What Parents Can Do At Home

Test-Taking Tips

• Acknowledge test-taking anxiety as normal, but stay positive.

• Encourage your child to think positive thoughts like “I can do this!”

• Go over the test-taking tips with your child.

• Adequate rest makes a difference! Make sure your child goes to bed at a reasonable time; being active earlier in the day (not right before bed) can help kids get to sleep.

• Nutrition also influences how well children do on test; a good breakfast is important, but a large meal right before the test can be distracting.

We have been very hard at work the past few weeks preparing for 2 big days. Last week we went to another local school to share our Science tri-boards and moon Rocks with students. On Thursday we participated in the Service Learning Symposium at NKU, where we displayed 3 tri-boards of our Service Learning Projects. Then on Friday night we hosted a stargazing night for the community. We also had a visit from Dean Regas from the Cincinnati Observatory.  Below are several pictures of our weeks events.

As One Quarter Ends Another Begins

I will be sending report cards for the second quarter home Tuesday January 22 with each student.

During the third quarter we will continue our study of the colonies and the Revolutionary War in Social Studies.  We will be studying Earth Science and will continue our study of the Old Testament.

The 6th grade will be taking a Math test this week on equalities and inequalities and then will be introduced to integers in the next chapter.

5th graders will be taking a test this Friday on fraction and number concepts and will continue with adding and subtracting fractions in the next chapter.

We will also complete the Language unit on verbs this week and then move into the adverb and adjective unit.

As the third quarter begins, please encourage your child to continue to give their best.  Thank you for all you do as we work together to provide the best education for your child.

As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to send a note, email or give me a call.
