What a busy day!  We started our morning by learning how to thread a needle and tie a knot.  Students sewed the Fruits of the Spirit for a good portion of the morning.

This afternoon we began working on one of our Service Learning projects.  We made place mats for the Hosea House to use as they serve dinners to their clients.  This is a project we will continue throughout the year.  Unfortunately the students are too young to serve food at the dinners, but making the place mats allows them to still participate.  The Hosea House uses the place mats for every dinner and many clients take them home after eating dinner.

On Friday morning we celebrated Mass with Bishop Foys.  After Mass he made a visit to each classroom.  He talked to the students about what they liked about Saint Philip School.  Some of the student answers included, computer class, the teachers, Smartboards and their friends.  He reminded them to thank their parents for making sacrifices so they could attend St. Philip School.

Attention 5th Grade Students

I received a phone call about a possible misprint on the Spelling Word Sort.  Please do the best you can and I will take a look at the Word Sort tomorrow in class.

Today we started our second Unit in Religion.  In this unit we will begin to learn more about each sacrament.  We will first study Baptism.  We will each be writing letters to our Godparents during this chapter.  Each student will need the address for each of their Godparents, 2 letter envelopes and 2 stamps ($1.00 if you would like me to purchase the stamps).
I have also asked each student to bring pictures of their own Baptism to share with the class.  Students do not have do bring photos, only if they want to share.

Interviews On Faith

Questions:

1.  Are there some saints who are special to you?  Why are they special?

2.  Sacramentals are things like rosaries, statues and holy water.  Do you have any sacramentals?  If so, how do they bring you closer to God?

3.  In school we learn about different kinds of prayers and devotions.  What are some that are important to you?  Why are they important?

As a class we decided to make tonight a Study Night.  Please take the time tonight to study for our Science, Religion and Spelling Tests that we will take on Friday.

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

Last night was the first night of Spelling homework.  I would like to bring your attention to two items regarding Spelling.

1.  Every Monday night students will have Spelling homework.  This will include a Word Sort and Practice page.  The words used for the Word Sort are on the first page of the lesson in the text book.  There are 20 words for each lesson.

2.  This year we have introduced a new Spelling series called Spelling Connections.  You may have noticed last night that I am trying something new with the students. On Friday I gave the class a pretest and based on the score of the pretest I have assigned a Spelling List to each student.  Some of the assigned words are from the lesson list and some are from the teacher resource book.  Not all students have the same Spelling List, some are similar and some have 20 different words.  Please be sure your child is bringing home their list each night, they will not be able to call a friend if they forget their list and they will not be able to always go to the list in the text book.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.  Have a great week!

We had a GREAT first week of school!  We spent some time this week looking through our text books and talking about what we will learn this year.  We completed a Science experiment with the 3rd and 4th graders and read the first story in our Readers.

Next week we will begin our regular weekly routine, including our first chapter in Religion and Spelling.

I hope you are all as excited as I am :)

I am trying a few new things on the Blog.  My first attempt is to create a fish tank - it should be on the right top of the Blog, if it worked :)  You can feed the fish by clicking your mouse.  Once the black dot, food, is there the fish will swim towards it.  You can add several dots of food at a time, the fish will continue to move toward your mouse.  Have fun!
